Dr. Michael S. Opsahl

Dr. Michael Opsahl, Ob/Gyn, Reproductive EndocrynologistDr. Opsahl graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1974 with a degree in Biology. He attended the Medical University of South Carolina, graduating in 1978. He completed his internship in Obstetrics and Gynecology before serving as the Medical Officer of the USS Nassau, LHA-4. After sea duty, he became a resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) in Bethesda, MD. Upon completing residency training, he served as an obstetrician-gynecologist at the Naval Hospital in Okinawa, Japan for two years.

Dr. Opsahl completed fellowship-training in Reproductive Endocrinology at Walter Reed Army Hospital and the National Institutes of Health in 1987. He served the remainder of his Naval career at the NNMC in Bethesda, MD as Director of Reproductive Endocrinology. During his tenure at NNMC, Dr. Opsahl also became an Associate Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). He continued to teach at USUHS until his move to Washington State in 2004.

Dr. Opsahl retired from the US Navy in 1994 and joined the Genetics & IVF Institute in Fairfax, Virginia where he eventually became the Infertility Medical Director.

Dr. Opsahl is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology. Dr. Opsahl has authored over 25 scientific papers. He also serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the medical journals Fertility and Sterility and Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Opsahl’s professional interests include assisted reproduction, male infertility, reproductive aging, oocyte donation, ovarian cryopreservation, statistics and treatment outcome prediction, and reproductive surgery.

Dr. Opsahl provides clinical direction for male infertility issues and the sperm laboratory. He also performs non-surgical sperm aspiration procedures for men with obstructive azoospermia such as a previous vasectomy or congenital absence of the vas deferens.

Dr. Opsahl's hobbies include running, golfing and computers. Dr. Opsahl has been happily married for 25 years and his wife was an elementary school teacher and school volunteer. He has twin sons, Matt and Kevin, who are in college and who are avid artists and musicians.
