A thorough, accurate evaluation leads to the best treatment plan

At the Northwest Center for Reproductive Sciences, we believe that a thorough, accurate evaluation permits us to develop the most appropriate and individualized treatment plan for each patient.

The accurate diagnosis of infertility is particularly challenging because there is such an abundance of possible causes involving either or both partners in an infertile couple. Reproductive disorders can be grouped into certain types to help guide the diagnostic process. These groups include Ovulation/ovarian disorders, Sperm disorders (“male factor”) and Pelvic Structural disorders (“pelvic factor”).

Systematic evaluation of each type of reproductive disorder is required to avoid error in diagnosis that can result if one focuses on one obvious cause but misses less obvious contributing factors. This omission inevitably leads to treatment failure as 25-30% of couples have multiple causes. Consequently, in order to reach the most accurate diagnosis for each couple, we advocate the following series of tests for our patients:

• A complete medical history
• Semen analysis with strict sperm morphology
• Acrosome reaction test
• Clomiphene citrate challenge test
• Timed pelvic ultrasound
• Ovarian antral follicle count
• Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)
• Sonohysterogram (SHG)
• Laparoscopy and/or Hysteroscopy (only in some cases)
